A work in progress.

Dave awoke from a calm sleep.  He lay there, eyes closed, listening to the birds outside in the early morning calm.  He could hear the rustlings of the first villagers to awaken as they went about their morning routine.  Finally, he sat up, stretching his back as he sat upon his flat sleeping mat.  He rolled up his bedroll and dressed for the day, wearing his comfortable robe and pants.  He slid open the papery door to the main chamber of the small house, seeing his surrogate family groggily going about the morning routine.  Dave walked outside, deciding to go for a walk.  He'd work up an appetite, have a hearty breakfast, then begin the mornings' lesson to the youngsters.  After he sent them on their way, he'd work with the young men for a while.
Perhaps some of them are ready to move up... We'll see in a little while, I guess.  I might be able to do an out-of-class observation on them, have one of the olders act as a bully... yeah...

Dave stopped at the top of the hill he was at, looking around from the vantage point.  Small hut-like houses littered the hillside near his house, a small dirt path winding its way through the center of town and snaking on through the foothills of the mountains nearby.  Greenery covered everything besides that path, making the hills look like furry green balloons.  It was middle spring, the crops were starting to grow.  Dave looked away from the village, on his right, to the fields, slightly to his left.  He watched as the farmers tended to the rice and vegetable crops.  Looking further left, he noticed the shepherds with various flocks, and beyond that the long, flat-looking fishing boats out in the water.

Ahhh, paradise.

That was the last day Dave was able to see the village in peace.

Just an old man piddlin' around these waters
